Azure on a Canadian pale Argent an escutcheon of the Arms of the Northwest Territories;
The blue represents the lakes and waters of the Northwest Territories, while the white symbolizes ice and snow. The placement of the territorial arms on a Canadian pale between two blue panels echoes the design of the National Flag of Canada.

The Flag was adopted by the Flag Ordinance (O.N.W.T 1971, c. 4), assented on 18 February 1971.
